After warming up, Bobby Currie and Mike Nomikos (our Judo Black Belts) took myself and handful of other guys through breakfalling. I had asked Mike if I could start with learning this as the 1 class I had taken last year was pretty tough because I was being thrown without understanding breakfalling. So we went over a series of falls to help prepare your body for the eventual feeling of being slammed. And as Bobby explained - Breakfalling is like anything else in Martial Arts. It takes time and you have to make your own. But breaking your fall is also the first step in taking control of the fight - should you be tossed to the ground. After that I watched some sparring from the side of the mat which involved some grip fighting, foot sweeps and shoulder throws. That's Bobby in the picture working with Damien. I can only do 1 hour a week in Judo due to the times of the classes but it will be interesting to see what I can pick up and use in my Jiu Jitsu game. My Dad studied Judo when he was Younger. Not sure if that will help but hopefully the breakfalling will. |
