A week of firsts

Another black belt putting me in a choke pose - paulo guillobel on TwitpicLast week contained many 'firsts' First time I have been 'broken' during a roll, first time I have performed a flying armbar, and the first time I've trained to music I brought in (some dirty dubstep).

I started last week going to work with my Gi in my bag but soon realized nipping to the lunch class is not that easy to do. Especially when you are in the middle of a 'Radiothon' (I work in Radio and we were doing a Haiti Special)

Regardless...It would be better for me to be picking up some no gi right now heading into tournament season. So that night I went to Wrestling. The Coach, Fred, worked us through our drills, then a take down technique (leg triangle after taking the back), then we trained. I really am bad at takedown wrestling. I'll figure it out though through my 'shut up and train' motto..

Then it was time to kick off training under Paulo Guillobel who me met last April around the time of Copa Ontario, a local BJJ Tournament ran by Professor Britto.

Paulo, who runs his own academy in San Clemente California, let us know it was going to be a week of guard work.

The pace he set was much more relaxed than Saulo Ribeiro set and I welcomed this. Each class started with a relaxed warm up and stretching session

The week's lesson consisted of many ways to set up sweeps and submissions from open guard and high guard. How to secure grips. How to work with your options and setup's. Everyone was raving about how good the classes were. A wide range of techniques, submissions, sweeps and grips. If I was to go into details on what exactly we convered for the week this blog will get boring so I will,in synopsis, say I will be using open guard and my long legs alot more now to create sweeps and opportunities I have never utilised.

Paulo also stayed behind after every class and chilled out or went over moves or just kept teaching. I thought that was really good of him. He liked to chat about jiu jitsu and what he thinks are important, like emphasis on grips. Or if he saw 2 students drilling after class he might go and help.

Another great week of training and 1 week until our Head instructor Jorge Britto returns.

The Firsts

Broken

During a sparring session with a Purple Belt (and MMA fighter) Dave Bodrug, I 'broke'. Simple. It was very strange and happened fast. I simply found myself in very deep water during a roll and I realized how helpless I was, my brain started fired warning signals, my breathing went frantic and I felt totally beaten and out of my element. I was a bit shaken. I proceeded to regain composer and then sparred another 2 times but I was still reeling. Very strange, unexpected, but a reminder that sometimes we get scared and we have to deal with it.  He really put it on me. Very Humbling.

Flying Armbars

The final Move Paulo would show us was the flying armbar which I featured on the site last week. I was lucky enough to be Paulo's 'dummy' to demonstrate this on and he showed both a beginner and advanced version. I expect to develop this now. It's alot of fun. And if you catch it in competition you will get some easy and fast fights. If you miss it - sore back.

Rolling to Dubstep

I've been threatening this for a long time and today we listened to some music that came from my collection. I've been rolling to bad techno and Chakira for too long! I wanted to explore what it's like to train to Dubstep - which is a style of Breakbeat  and to be honest - I cant remember? I don't think you really take much else in when you are rolling except your fight. Oh well. It was good to warm up to though...And our Sunday Instructor, Tommy, has been converted and has CD's in pocket. Learn about Dubstep here
