Am I?

In a random discussion at work about Athletes a reference was being made about 'the way an athlete trains'. "Like me - I'm an athlete" I said and I got a look from 1 person that ultimately not only questioned that statement but denied it too. Which kind of annoyed me as no-one at work has any idea of the time I spend training.

And when getting ready to train at Extreme Fitness with Nicole last week I was bagging my belongings and a guy asked 'Are you a fighter?' and I looked at him. I was wearing my Gracie Competition Team T Shirt. "Learning to be?" I replied.

Am I an athlete? Am I a fighter? Good questions...

I believe I am an athlete. Until I began training Jiu Jitsu I would have never been able to say this. I've been many things but never an athlete. I don't drink, or smoke cigarettes - I train week in week out and I compete in Amateur tournaments on a regular basis. And even now I have Nicole's help with a sports specific training program. I certainly think this qualifies me as an athlete. Actually when I am out jogging for some reason I think for sure I am.

But am I a fighter? I am a martial artist and a Jiu Jitsu fighter but the term 'fighter' itself, when talking in the realms of  'mano a mano',  makes me think of a guy who likes striking as well as the ground game so in earnest I don't think I can say I am a fighter. Yet. Maybe I am wrong.

Although - my body feels sore all the time and got those injuries...just like a fighters?

maybe a topic for when you are hanging out after class chatting or something...
