On the Mat - Training Diary

My first few days back after my face-plant I was very tentative and nervous to use my forehead but I've got past that. My main focus right now is guard passing. I never thought I would enjoy it as much as I am and I always knew there was alot to it as the entire brown belt chapter of The University of Jiu Jitsu book is all guard passing...

I have learned alot from Coach Tommy in recent months and would definitely accredit him with alot of the techniques I am using. I feel I am giving my open guard a break for a while, as well as my cross chokes in order to explore sweeps from open guard to top and guard passing. Coach Eduardo has also been giving classes on smash passing. I still don't Torreando pass but perhaps one day. Tommy had some good feedback for me after my fights and he wasn't even there for mine. If you surround yourself with winners you really should listen to them. They might have insight into the game that you cannot see.

I just keep falling deeper and deeper in Jiu Jitsu to the point now where my goal is to become a Grapplers Quest and World Champion. Where before I thought I could not do this because I got into the game too late, I realize there is a place for me in the Masters Division. I will do Adult when I have to but I'm going to find a home in this division. Lightweight Masters. At least I am competing and getting after it. Testing myself against other fighters and trying to prove my Jiu Jitsu. Old man strength counts.

I just turned 34 and took home Bronze medal in the Ontario Open Blue Belt Lightweight Masters Division. I wanted Gold but I didn't get it. I learned alot. Mostly about my attitude when I lose. At this stage of the game, almost 4 years training, I'm still on that 'tough end of the curve'. I'm winning and losing (winning or learning). But I need to grow as a competitor. Need to mature.

It's now time to get ready to go for Gold at Grapplers Quest and knock off one of my objectives. I haven't done any strength training either for a while as I am spending all my time either working to pay the bills or training Jiu Jitsu. I just want to spend all the time I can on the mat to work on my technique rather than trying to build my strength. It's a time factor too. If I end up working +40-50 hours or more then it interferes with my training. But right now it's all Jiu Jitsu. 6 days a week - training with my family at Toronto BJJ.
