I was really excited to go back to open mat today to work on the new Chokes that Ahmad Showed from Side Control at Saturdays class. They are both brutal and have a bit of flare. The class on Saturday was so refreshing. Ahmad has a slightly different way of running his classes..He does a fairly rigourous warm up (lots of sprints...power and explosive drills) so you better be ready for them. He then splits the class into beginners and advanced and every class we do an armbar, omoplata, triangle drill. Then technique...then rolling. Todays techniqe featured a choke from side control - with 4 variations...all with devasting effects... So again I have added weapons to my side control...knee on belly, north south transitioning and now more choking. Good times. ( I know I am meant to be resting my hand...) The choke started by using totally different controls points than I have been using and the end is a cross choke with or without the Gi. But even the initial control gives me new places to explore... 2 things while rolling: I got it 'put on me' by a while belt. It was one of those fights were I know I am deep in battle. He was 185 and hungry to smash me with his weight. He had some good skills and I survived but I had very little offensively for him. I was on survival mode for alot of the time. I complimented him on his strength and technique and he gave my technique the nod too so as we chatted after...But it was a fight for sure. Was surviving enough? And I watched Ahmad 'toy' with one of my team mates...a blue belt who was getting subbed every 30 seconds with pretty fancy moves. Ahmad has some arials. And just pulling sub's from places even I as a spectator didn't see. That's some high level joojeets. It makes me think I should not be sitting Saturdays out! I could be missing out... So I went to open mat today and spent some time working on the choke with Tim, worked some chokes from the back then rolled. Did some No Gi with Gabe and then another roll - this time with Chris Bohm - a heavy weight...fun times.. So that has been a week Jorge has been away.. Josh, Mikey and Tommy (and Melissa) are running tight classes following Jorge's standards. Lots of people still showing up to train..and lots of chances to make you feel Jiu Jitsu sore at night.. But I am taking advantage of the chance to rest a bit more than I usually do and my hand is not as painful at the minute..still should get an Xray.. This week there is only lunchtime training due to it being Christmas. The full schedule is up in the facebook group Finally..Toronto BJJ has sponsored the Christmas day meal for Evergreen Centre for Street Youth. I will be spending Christmas Day with some of my team mates at The Yonge St Mission helping out at the Xmas Dinner so maybe I will see you there? Get details here |
