Toronto's Jiu-Jitsu evolution continues at The Ontario Open

For many reasons the 2012 Ontario Open will stand out in my memory as an important tournament for Toronto. The 2 day event had record numbers of competitors, huge sponsorship and endorsements, trips to the Mundials up for grabs for 'Absolute' winners and all the trimmings to put it on the map as one of the 'must attend' BJJ events on the Canadian Calendar.

Training has definitely stepped up over the last week as our team gets ready for such tournaments as The New York Open, Worlds, The Ontario Open and beyond.

There has been a renewed focus on drills, cardio and endurance. That moment when you want to collapse doing burpees - it happens.

When I was a kid, I used to get scared that dinosaurs would sneak into my room at night and eat me. It was terrible. The only thing that calmed me down was my Dad sticking a NO DINOSAURS ALLOWED plaque on my door. Of course that would work. Dinosaurs would not trespass. I knew that much. So I got over my fears.

Is the IBJJF being too 'safe'?

I've been at work most of the day watching my Twitter and Facebook feeds from IBJJF's Pan Jiu Jitsu purple belt divisions.

There has already been drama in the form of referee's making some questionable calls.

February / March training update

Been a while since I have updated the blog with what has been happening with training so let's take a quick look back.

February was a tough month - As I mentioned previously, I was sick for quite alot of the month and ended up taking time off in order to not spread the fun with my team mates and to give myself some rest.

IBJJF Montreal 2012

I was just browsing through the IBJJF 2012 calendar and stumbled upon the date for this year's championship in Montreal.

It's going down on Saturday September 1st. Part of me had hoped for a Toronto tournament but it's still a good result for Canada that the IBJJF are returning this year.

If you visit or train at Toronto BJJ, one of the things that many people speak highly of is the level of BJJ players at the school. The team always does incredibly well at tournaments whether they are local, national or world competitions. And a crucial ingredient to a successful team are guys who go out and represent themselves and our Professor with displays of high level Jiu-Jitsu. Of course - everyone who competes or helps guys get ready to compete play a role in the overall success but it's always inspiring to see your team mates who take the podium time and time again. It makes you want to work harder and when you train with these guys in the academy - you can't help but raise your game. You try to get behind them 100% to help them achieve their goals.

One of those players is Alessandro 'Chi Chi' Roman.

Xande Ribeiro wins San Diego World Pro Trials

Across the globe the Abu Dhabi World Pro Trials have been taking place.

In Montreal, Quebec, my team mate, Alessandro Roman - won the Canadian Purple Belt Absolutes and will be heading over to the World Pro Championships in the United Arab Emirates next month. A great achievement for 'Chi Chi' who is now preparing to take on the best in the world, to represent Britto Jiu Jitsu and Toronto BJJ. Under the knife

A few months ago I got a sty from training. I believe it was due to bacteria. The sty turned into a 'Chalazion' which is basically a small bump in my eyelid due to some sort of blockage (oil or fluids) that cannot disperse.

Having had this for several months I went under the knife today to have it removed. I'll be taking a few days off training to let it heal.
