Office therapy for Grapplers hands @thewisegrapplers advice..... on Twitpic

As I get deeper into BJJ I'm noticing that my fingers are sore all the time. Resting them is not an option as the Doctor would have me do as I train almost every day.

But it is to the point now where I sometimes cannot hold a grip or I miss doing a position or transition due to my fingers being either unable to close tightly. Even opening doors sometimes can be tricky. And my Choke Submissions are suffering.

It 'might' also be arthritis. I'm 33 in a few weeks so it's not unheard of. And I will admit also to not looking after myself properly with Supplements (Glucosamine & Chondroitin) which would help maintain and rebuild my cartilage and help with Athritis.
(Note: Maintain - not increase or rebuild cartilage). Plus the hours on the mats are causing my fingers to in fact change shape. Mostyl due to calluses and swollen knuckles.

So you get it - Scott has sore hands.

However I've just got a good tip from 'The Wise Grappler'. He wrote a facebook note called '28 Things I Wish I Knew as a BJJ White Belt!' (read)

Amongst all of the great points - this 1 caught my attention:

- Keep a flower pot at the office large enough to soak my sore wrists, hands and elbows during the day and a bathroom trash can for my toes, feet, and ankles at night

Here is a follow up comment:

Being an office worker gives me the opportunity to try this out! (And get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome too but in for a penny I say...)

So moving forward here is what I will do:

  • Take Glucosamine Supplements
  • Do the flower pot & ice at the office
  • Use the 'Gripper' I bought to strengthen my fingers. I also have a Squeeze Ball for the same reason
  • When doing Strength Training (Pull Up's) I will throw my Towel across the bar and use this to pull myself up.

A team mate, Melissa, had also told me to do the ice buckets. Another also mentioned putting raw warm rice in bowl and putting your hands in it and clinch them 15 times for 3 sets. A homeopathic approach.

I will keep you posted on how all of this works out and if you have any suggestions about this topic - please leave a comment and share with other readers!

Enjoy your training

Scott
