Since the head of our Jiu Jitsu Association, Saulo Ribeiro, arrived - I wondered what way he would handle the several hundred students he was taking on for 2 weeks. I got a glimpse tonight of a master at work. I enjoyed it so much - I BOUGHT THE T SHIRT! I missed 1 class this week and tonight I walked in to a new way of doing things. I could tell the Sheriff was in town and was doing some restructuring. A new Forma (opening formation) is the big change but each part of the night for the 2 hours was 'new' and more efficient (especially for organising big classes). This included new ways to do warms ups right through to final sparring. And with each adjustment Saulo explained why we needed to believe in it's rationale. The Purple belts were being punished with push ups if they didn't exercise control..People with no patches - push ups. Discipline and intensity.
And tonight I will probably tell people in the future is when I finally started to understand what leverage is. When a Black Belt says 'Leverage' - they are talking about something that I am having a hard time understanding, as I have no point of reference. But when Saulo demonstrated, and fully explained, passing guard from a standing position he clearly showed a 'transferring of leverage from 1 part of the body to another to create pressure'. And I saw it. And it related back to cartwheels from before (of course). Trusting your body to do new things. What we learned tonight was the fundamentals of standing guard pass and it has to be one of the most efficient things I have learnt to date. With the emphasis to detail, especially the kinetic rules behind the hips I begin to understand leverage points and this is what I need to be looking for when I am learning Jiu Jitsu.
How I feel when doing a move. Thats what is important. That was Saulo's lesson. 1 of them. That's what he is most interested in. We are not learning new moves. We are learning his way of thinking. And I am loving it. It's the pathway to the gentle art. I felt like part of an Army tonight. A peaceful Army but an army none the less. I reckon I will have about another 6 classes with him. And next week the plan is for him to give the history lesson in class about his past and all the juicy details none of us know. I'm going to make sure that is recorded. To be honest I think he is enjoying the opportunity to talk about the legacy he is bringing to us - which I am totally fine with! I asked him tonight for an interview for the site and he has agreed so look for that next week plus an appearance by Mr Ribeiro on Newstalk 1010 on The Ryan Doyle Show.

Forma is now a 7 man deep formation going several rows back. The reason - so that Saulo never has his back to the picture of Helio Gracie. I recall now a moment, later on, when the students were all in a circle and Saulo was showing us the Stand up Guard Pass..directly under the picture of Helio. And I remember thinking how important Helio must be to Saulo and to wonder what Saulo feels at this time..passing on the true teachings about leverage - what he learnt from Helio
