I have been following the story of 'Saving Tererê' since Professor Britto stood up in front of the class at Toronto BJJ and spoke about his friend and Jiu Jitsu legend and the desperate fight he is in with addiction to drugs and his depression.
With the help of the net, it has been easier to keep up to date with what has been happening with Fernando Tererê. And today there was news circulating from GracieMag about the fighter entering a clinic to begin treatment.
And in Canada funds were raised through a facebook group and T Shirt Charity set up by 'Fight Planet's' Riccardo Ammendolia.
Toronto BJJ also raised a few hundred dollars and sent that off to the Family of the fighter...
Basically the costs of the clinics that can help Tererê are much higher than normal and his family are unable to meet the costs. So GracieMag and the Jiu Jitsu community, including Marcelo Garcia, started to raise awareness and donations to help the family pay for treatment.
I just got a Tweet from Marcelo Garcia RT: @marcelogarciajj: Terere still needs our help! Thank you everyone who already helped we were able to get this started but we still need more help
"At four in the morning this Wednesday, Jiu-Jitsu sensation Fernando Tererê finally left the Cantagalo favela and was checked in at a highly-regarded clinic in Sorocaba, São Paulo, to begin treatment for depression.
Relieved about the champion’s chances for recovery, the family now needs more financial resources (around 10 thousand reais), to keep the fighter in the clinic..." continue reading
As the article says - Anyone who wishes to help by donating to the Tererê fund via Paypal may do so through Marcelo Garcia’s Tererê Help Fund,
The Brazilian bank account the family set up for anyone who would like to help is:
Banco do Brasil
Agência: 0525-8 Conta Corrente: 24611-5 Carlos Augusto da Silva (Tio Barriga) CPF: 495662967-20
Addiction is no easy thing to kick. My hope is that Tererê is now getting the care he needs in order to truly begin the road back to full health and the Tournament Tatami's. It is important for the BJJ Community to show support and solidarity at this time as we can all help in keeping the momentum, awareness and support flowing for Fernando. I will do my best to keep you up to date with any news...
