Taking it to the next level
On the Mat - Training Diary

How do you take your Jiu Jisu to the next level? I don't want good Jiu Jitsu. I want great Jiu Jitsu but there is something holding me back. I'm totally hooked on training. It's not an obsession or an addiction but simply now a way of life. Every time I step onto the mats at Toronto BJJ I know 'I would rather be here right now than anywhere else"

"Sometimes I just want to be with my family and watch movie and eat some popcorn. But when I step on the mat I know there is no other place I'd rather be." -Marcelo Garcia

As we begin to run I look at everyone's faces and I recognize every one. And every one is my friend. And we are there for ourselves and each other. And it's so much fun.

But this lifestyle, in it's purest form, does not allow a person to harm their body. And that's what I have been doing. Neglecting my diet and over indulging in 'treats' of the herbal kind.

But not any more.

I basically have had several small epiphanies this week that have allowed me to put everything in perspective.

Jiu Jitsu really does rebuild you from inside out. And when the changes start manifesting themselves externally people take notice. Especially yourself.

I am about to undergo a huge lifestyle change. I am already 4 days into it and already I am thinking with much more clarity and feel alot more determined. When you remove obstacles in your life or you can empower yourself to make change then the only thing that is going to hold you back is your mind and body. If your body is not being harmed by neglectful behaviour - then the only thing that will hold you back is your mind.

My mind is about to be cleared of the haze that has surrounded it for too many years and while I am nervous about the changes...I know that through continually showing up to train everyday that this challenge will be met and overcome.

I want my Purple Belt by the end of this year. That's my goal. I will have been training for 3.5 years by that stage and I am prepared to pour on the training to achieve this short term goal.

Now it's gonna get real.

What are you doing to take your training to the next level? I'd love to hear from you. Please drop a comment and share with other readers!
