Talking during rolling

I'm not one for talking to my opponents during rolling. With some of my close training partners of course we sometimes have a quick pow wow about something that just took place but most of the time I tend to say nothing. Talking during training can be distracting and can be used as another 'weapon' against an opponent during a tournament fight. Although I can't recall fighting anyone yet in competition who wanted to have a chat while in my guard. Plus I'm not limiting this to talking smack.

Have you ever rolled with a guy or girl who has a GI that smells very good? Like Mum used to wash your clothes... and that's usually the closest I get to talking. I simply wish to compliment them on such a well washed GI. If you have just trained for an hour and you go from soiled GI's to someone who has arrived for the 2nd hour in a fresh GI...you know what I mean. I can tell a Downey user when I smell one.

Let's quickly consider that most of us, when paid a compliment, will respond with 'Thanks' or at least your brain will start the process of making you respond kindly to what was said to you. And in a game where we look for the smallest lapse of concentration who knows, throwing a compliment out there to your opponent may offer a small enough distraction for you to change the game. Try complimenting your opponent as a way to distract them. Let me know how that goes for you...
