Feb. 1st marked, in earnest, 4 weeks of 'higher gear' training as we begin our final preparations for the Tournament in Montreal on March 6th. This will be my first time competing outside of Toronto and I will be competing in the Men's Blue Belt Lightweight Division. DietJust so we can be clear - my diet is not great. I eat what I want to eat - when I want to eat it. If you know anything about a Northern Irish diet you will know that it's based in meat and potatoes and probably fryed. And I have a stupidly high metabolism and this means I simply don't put weight on. But last night I said goodbye (for now) to junk food so no chocolate, chips or McDonalds. I still have to phase out the Breakfast Sandwiches from Tim Horton's and the sugary drinks but 1 step at a time people. I will be focusing on lots of good calories and will look for the healthy option when I can and work on cutting the sugar out some more...Premium fuel for the machine for the upcoming weeks to condition the engine... Additional Training:Wrestling classes with Mr Fred to sharpen my take downs and improve my cardio. I don't have that 'explosiveness' yet (Remember eating Breakfast Sandwiches?) but I am understanding the technique. So 4 weeks to soak up the benefits from a great instructor. (Wrestling Class (evening's) are Monday & Wednesday at 7pm @ Toronto BJJ) Weights - 2 times a week: 1 time for conditioning (rowing and lights weights faster reps) and 1 time for power lifting. I used to love lifting but I seem to have lost my mojo a little here. But I will kick start myself back into it. The problem is not having a real program to do. So I don't think there is as much point. I should remedy this by mapping out a 4 week program ...easy enough to do (or I can ask a Team Mate) . Also - I could do with gaining 10 lbs which is going to be hard to do so I will have to do the supplements (Creatine) and increase those DELICIOUS protein shakes.. Gi training - I train 6 days a week. 5 if I am in 'hang with my dog' mode. I am aiming for 15 hours on the mats per week - I'm still around 10 so I need to add a lunch or more on Sunday. Sunday at Open Mat is the best opportunity to drill dril drill so I intend to keep this up...A vital part of you game should be drilling. Reflexes and muscle memory are keys to success. Like the flying armbar - That's something I have to pull out in a competition ;) Exploring Positions:Spider Guard Sweep, Dela Riva Sweep, Guard Passing (always), Triangle defense, side control, knee on belly, chokes. I think my chokes are becoming my best weapon. Thinking of Cutting Weight?I'm already hearing talk of people cutting weight. Can I offer some advice?Do not cut weight for BJJ Tournaments. If you change your routine and are focused on cutting weight you will not be able to focus on the real task which is taking the guy down and submitting him. That should really be what you are thinking about. Not whether or not you need to go back into the Sauna or if you can eat that muffin. You want to eat as much as you want and enjoy the lead up and not mess with your routine. This is my advice. Weight cuts are for fighters getting paid alot of cash and they can really hurt you if not done right. I've been there and prefer to fight as a light - lightweight rather than stress out and starve my body just to be a heavy featherweight. My 2 cents. If you want more input - talk to your team mates..
