I need to get back on a few wagon's I have fallen off. The first is NO GI jiu jitsu. I went back to class on Monday Apr 5 after a long hiatus and was immediatly put to work. I think in 1 fight I was submitted about 10 times. It's tough to transition to fighting without a GI. It frustrates me when I go for a grip and it simply isnt there. Or my hand slips right off my opponent. I think 'OK now what?' and then there is the speed. It's 10 times faster than with the GI and also your attack and reaction time is in milliseconds and not seconds which you can enjoy in the GI. And when (if) I get to mount I don't seem to have too many options for submissions. So why bother? Well I plan to compete in the NO GI tournament on the Sunday at Copa Ontario for a start... Some benefits of doing wrestling / NO GI submissions: Obviously NO Gi improves your Cardio. The Take Down aspect of NO GI can be a very strenous battle and the scrambles are alot more so you expend alot more energy. Your reaction time through this will start improving. Technique will get sharpened. It gives an opportunity to work with takedowns and defending them. And I have to expand on my submissions. As 'choking' using the GI is my weapon of choice I have to consider a new game when I grapple without it. Taking the back and using my longer legs to set up finishes will probably have to become a key component of any NO GI game I develop. So I am adding a NO GI class to the schedule now...perhaps 2. The other Wagon I need to hop back on is some strength and conditioning. I have not lifted weights in weeks. I honestly don't like these franchise gyms like Good Life and Extreme here in Toronto...it's the guys who go there...not the variety I like to be surrounded by...But I am a member of Goodlife beside my work and when I go for late lunch at least it is meat head minimum and mostly old ladies and regular joes... Jorge ended up giving me some good advice after class about how to just do a 2 day a week program and what to focus on and why - with a brief idea of what I should do for a program...just the basics but tomorrow I am going to go and spend an hour or so lifting to keep my joints strong and to maintain my power as I try to drop down into Feather for Copa (a loss of about 8lbs comfortably). I did weights very regularly in my first 2 years of Jiu Jitsu and do enjoy it so I just have to find the motivation to go and supplement my grappling. This time last year my focus was totally different..I was eating and lifting to gain weight and strength but when I increased my hours of Jiu Jitsu to about 10-15 hours per week it becomes harder to be motivated to do Strength training on top of that. For me anyways... And just as I was wrapping this Blog up I was sent this link by a SOTN member - Anthony Baroudi - I though I would share it as it ties into my problem regarding setting up new submissions without the GI. Using a 10th Planet Setup (Eddie Bravo admits this is NOT a 10th Planet choke) Katsumura setups up a 'ninja' choke. The choke itself uses the forearm of the right arm in the same way I use it for a cross choke (using the blade of the right wrist to cut off the carotid artery on the left side) - but instead of crossing the choke on the front he uses a grip similar to a rear naked choke (grabbing your own bicep) It's neat - check it out.
