The road to II Copa Ontario

3 weeks from now is II Copa Ontario which is shaping up to be the best Jiu Jitsu tournament that Toronto has seen. From the look already - it's going to feature the highest level competition and organization. And the people involved from behind the scenes to the attendants - these are the people that are going to make this such a success...I just want to highlight some of the unique things about Copa Ontario.

As you may know the event is organized by my Professor and the benefit of this is his extensive experience at running competitions from his days in Brazil and having such an array of creditials as he has will already set the weekend apart - it's important to know that this is a tournament with the Athletes and their experience at the top of Professor Britto's mind. I also know the team of volunteers involved and they are all very dedicated to the success of this event.

Anyone who went last year to the event at Ryerson University knows that it was overall a solid tournament. I personally like the fact you get a FREE T SHIRT! (Sorry but it makes me mad when I have to pay $25 for a tournament T Shirt. Promoters should not be looking to make money there.) And there is a free GraiceMag for each competitor too. That's another important note. GracieMag are the sponsors and will be there with reporters and cameras so that's international coverage for Copa Ontario and it's competitors which is pretty cool. There are also some great savings for competitors on OTM gear when you register on line before April 16th including A new GI, Shorts and Rashguard.

From what I understand the female divisions this year already have registrants at all belt levels PLUS there is a masters division for +30 yrs. You can pre-register on line and you will know the day before exactly what time you will be competing which takes some of the hassle out of the day as you don't need to arrive to weigh in in the morning if you are competing at 4pm. Last year there was also a great level of refereeing and this year we are lucky to have an IBJJF referee Andre ‘Negão’ Terencio in to oversee all the matches.

And that's another bonus at Copa Ontario - the guest list.

Some of Legends in Jiu Jitsu will be at Copa Ontario including Master Royler Gracie & Xande Ribeiro (I definitely smell some interview Material there). Also - from the MMA community, Ninja Rua, Mauricio Veio (Andre Dida's Brother and Head of Evolution Thai)  and Jack Bateman (CEO of Warrior1) are going to be hanging out. If you want some cool new facebook pictures you know this is a great opportunity for that.

There will be some great Jiu Jitsu at this event as there are alot of academies sending teams and on the Sunday there is going to be an inter-club tournament involving 3 fighters from each school in a Showcase so that's also something extra to look forward to on the Sunday which is the NO GI day...

Also notable - Copa Ontario's work with charitable organizations like Daily Bread Food Bank and the Yonge Street Mission which both receive support through the event.

I will throw it out there...if you want to get close to international level competition right here in Canada then Copa Ontario is the tournament for you. I look forward to seeing you there!
